Eupatoria, 78-km north-west of Sevastopol, is an ancient city holding a number of relics reflecting the rich and diverse cultures in the Crimean history. Settled by Greeks in the 6th to 5th centuries B.C., the town was inhabited by Slavs in the 10th to 12th centuries, then renamed Hezlev by the Turks who fortified it and turned into a slave-trading market in the 15th century. Dzuma-Dhzmi Mosque (1552) at Eupatoria, the largest Crimea’s mosque with tall minarets, was restored in 1976.
Next the mosque the acting orthodox church and the Karaites’s kenassa are situated. It is for this reason that Eupatoria got the name of the Lesser Jerusalem among the Crimeans.
Beautiful sandy beaches stretch for kilometers along the bay.
During the Crimean war of 1854-1855 the allied troops of Great Britain, France and Turkey landed at Kalamita bay near Eupatoria and marched south towards Sevastopol. On the way from Sevastopol to Eupatoria one can stop on the former battlefield on the Alma river with monuments to the Russian and British soldiers.
Close to Eupatoria is the little town of Saki known for its mineral spa. There are many sanatoria both at Saki and Eupatoria.
