Gourzouf with its steep, winding streets and old wooden houses is a magnet for artists and writers. The village, 18-km north-east of Yalta , is built around a picturesque bay with the rocky Genoese Cliff at its eastern end. Bear Mountain looms along the coast to the east, protruding into the sea. A vast park surrounds the 19th century sanatoria. The dacha of the Duc de Richelieu, governor of Odessa (1803-1814), today houses the Pushkin in the Crimea Museum.
Chekhov’s dacha, also a museum, is situated on the shore of a picturesque cove close to the foot of Genoese Cliff. From the east side of the cliff, a vast children’s holiday camp called Artek is located. Next to the camp entrance are the remains of a 6th to 15th century fortress, founded by the Byzantines and rebuilt by the Genoese. In Gourzouf one can come upon Pushkin cypress, Checkov’s cove, Shalyapin’s cliff. The famous singer dreamt of building the “Art Castle” on this cliff.
