SIMFEROPOL

  • SIMFEROPOL.

Simferopol is the capital of the Crimea and the seat of the Crimean parliament. Most visitors to the Crimea arrive first to Simferopol. Founded in 1784 the town has much to be seen. Long ago the Scythian town of Neapolis, whose site can be visited, stood here. In all probability it used to be the capital of the late Scythian state in the Crimea from the 3d or 4th century A.D. The Crimean Regional Museum contains maps, tombstones, weaponry and a series of English lithographs of the Crimean War. A handful of orthodox churches stand in the historical centre of the town. The small Art Museum has a valuable collection of arts. The explorers of the area are amazed to find traces of the British telegraph which had been laid by the Siemens Brothers company in the 2d half of the 19th century. The total length of the British cable was over 11 000 kms. The British had landed it from London via Berlin, Kiev, Odessa, Simferopol, Kerch, Batumi, Tiflis, Tehran, Carachi and Calcutta. Till today a few old posts of the British telegraph have survived in the Crimea. Two of them are at Simferopol.
