Soudak is some 125-km north-east of Yalta along a twisted and narrow coastal road which affords a glimpse of the Crimea at its most untouched. As one of the main Genoese trading centers on the Great Silk Road, Soudak was graced with a giant Genoese Fortress in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was built on a massive cliff perched out over the sea. Ten of its 18 original defensive towers still stand.
Nearby at the village of Koktebel a house-museum of the Russian poet and painter Maximillian Voloshin is located. Built in 1903 it still attracts men of letters and art people. Among its guests were the writers Gorky, Tsvetaeva, A.Tolstoy, Grin, painters Latry, Polenov and others.
Note: a long way to drive from Sevastopol, about 3 hours one way.
