THE ROMANOVS’ PALACES IN THE CRIMEA

The duration of tour depends on how many palaces you would like to see. I don’t suggest to visit all palaces in one day as it will be rather exhausting. Normally the visit of 2 palaces takes 6-7 hours.

Notes:

  • 1) Livadia and Massandra palaces are museums and Dulber and Kharaks palaces are used as sanatoria and can be observed only outside while walking through palace parks.

I suggest to combine either the palace at Livadia or at Massandra with others and the Intercession church.

  • 2) Visit to Dulber is available only on certain days and hours and should be ordered in advance.
  • Dulber palace is a sample of elite architecture of the 19th century. “The most beautiful…Magnificent…stealing hearts”, these are the words that can convey feelings one feels at seeing this man-made miracle – a marvelous palace appearing with its silvery cupolas from an oriental fairy-tale. An architect Krasnov, a builder of the Livadia palace for Nikholas II, designed the Dulber palace for Grand Duke of Russia Pyotr Nikolayevich Romanov. A park of Dulber is a real botanical garden in miniature with its holms, plane-trees, sequoias and pistachio trees, cedars, cypresses and tens of other historical plants brought from all parts of the globe. After the Russian revolution the members of the Russian royal family were held prisoners at Dulber. This palace became their last residence in Russia from where they left their Motherland.
  • Architect Krasnov built the Kharaks summer palace for the Grand Duke of Russia Georgy Mikhailovich. A palace is surrounded by a vast park where one strolls through the relict juniper grove, the oldest in the the Crimea and comes upon an antique rotunda presented to the Grand Duke by Nikholas II to decorate the park. The Grand Duke’s estate was laid out on a massive spur of Ai-Todor cape which keeps the remnants of the Roman fortress of the 3d century AD.
  • On the edge of the rocky spur of Ai-Todor cape a symbol of the South Coast of the Crimea, the Swallow’s Nest castle perches. One can enjoy a wonderful view of the surroundings from the observation platform or a little café viewing the Swallow’s Nest castle.
  • The Intercession church at Oreanda was built on the orders of the Grand Duke of Russia Konstantin Nikolayevich, a brother of the Russian tsar Alexander II. The church went through hard periods of the Russian revolution, the Civil war, World War II and has survived till today. Much of the authentic interior has been preserved. Checkov’s bench is nearby where the writer used to sit enjoying the blue expanse of the sea and the mountains. He conceived the fibula-line of his short story “The Lady and the Dog” here.
  • High above the sea gleaming white amid a splendid part on the coast is a palace at Livadia built in the style of the Italian Renaissance, the former residence of the last Russian tsar. The Yalta conference of the heads of the 3 allied states- the USSR, the USA and Great Britain was held here in 1945. At present the hall and the studies which were the scene of the conference are occupied by a memorial complex. The exhibition on the first floor tells about the Romanovs’ stay at Livadia.
